I faced difficulties learning languages. I still do, actually. Language is primarily a tool of communication. Its purpose is to exchange information. Therefore, speaking and listening should make up the lion share of your study. That's what a tutor is for! As for vocabulary, we often memorize individual words, only to forget them soon after. I believe reading articles of your level (or slightly higher) is a much more efficient way to come across phrases and words in context. Context is everything!
