I like using different material - depending also on the language level of the student - such as textbooks, short movies, music, audio material, grammar textbook, games, flashcards and so on. On the other hand, given that I studied Latin and ancient Greek, if the students wanted it, we could also examine in depth the etim of the words and the structure of the phrase.
