I would have to agree with them.The amount of time I spend talking is directly related to the level of the student. I like to follow the 40/60 rule for beginners, the 70/30 rule for intermediate learners and the 90/10 rule for advanced students. This means that if you are just starting to learn a language, you should be speaking 40% of the lesson, 70% if you are at an intermediate level, and 90% if you are at an advanced level. As mentioned, I believe having a native grasp in both English and Spanish is an advantage. It allows me to easily translate idiomatic concepts and expressions that don’t have literal equivalent from one language to the other. I can draw meaning from my native understanding of both languages (and my experience in using both in daily life) to find the right examples and the closest translations from the source to the target language. I studied linguistics and, even though it is generally not required for a language teacher to be trained in linguistics, there is a growing number of experts in the community who believe it's a huge plus. I've drawn countless knowledge from it to teach.
