Ps. You can answer/post from your desktop now.

Perhaps a voice note will help. While thinking about this I realized that number 3 is pronounced differently depending on whether it’s the noun or the verb.

1, 4, and 5 are [gz] and the others are [ks]. The letter 'x' has three pronunciations (with the usual exceptions for names and words taken from other languages). ‘x’ in initial position [z] as in xylophone, Xerox ‘x’+vowel [gz] as in exact, exam, exert ‘xh’+vowel [gz] as in exhaust, exhibit otherwise [ks] as in box, six, except, extra, next

Hi Benny, Here is an answer to your follow up question. Question: Is the [k] in "explain" unreleased ? ([k̚] in narrow transcription) Answer: No, It is released in normal speech. ([k] in narrow transcription) Consider the following examples. I bought a book. book [bʊk] or [bʊk̚] I bought two books. books [bʊks] I bought them at a bookstore. bookstore [ˈbʊkstɔr] "explain" is identical. The [k] is released in normal speech.

Thank you very much Chris, Laurie cartwright, Avi and GuideDogSaint. I have a follow-up question for Chris. According to Dictionary.com, "explain" = /ɪkˈspleɪn/ -> ks. It contains a word-internal "sp" cluster so /p/ becomes the unaspirated p sound. Then I would like to check if /k/ in "ks" part is the unreleased k that sounds something between /k/ and /g/ or even the unaspirated k. Thanks again for your help.
