南柯一梦 A Dream Under The Southern Branch In the early Tang dynasty, there was a birthday party held under a big pagoda tree. After all the guests had gone, the drunk master leaned against the tree and fell asleep. He had a long long dream: 初唐的时候,有个人在家里举办了生日聚会。当宾客散去后,喝醉了的男主人斜靠在槐树下睡着了。他做了一个长长的梦: He dreamt he went to an unknown country named Pagoda and got recognised by the king. He was such a competent governor that every time when he wanted to leave that place, people there would cry and beg him to stay. So he stayed in “Southern Branch” for 20 years. 他梦到他来到了一个陌生的国度,叫做槐安国。在那儿,他得到了国王的赏识,当上了南柯太守;并且得到了如花美眷—— 一位漂亮的公主。他是如此地兢兢业业,以至于每次想要离开南柯的时候,南柯老百姓都哭求他留下。这样,他在南柯一留就是20年。 Later a war was coming and he waked when he failed to fight in the war. I just corrected the grammar and wrote it in a more natural English style. You have done a good job in translating your Chinese thoughts into English. Compare the stylistic differences in the two languages. Chinese tend to repeat while English does not. Just some cultural differences. The only technical error is your translation of the country name.

1. This is a very famous Chinese translated most famously by Giles Wade. This was how he entitled it. Being the foremost sinologist of his time and eversince, it has become the standard title. You can also find my translation from a Chinese text from http://jeffican.bokee.com/ entitled - Dream of The Southern Bough - A Chinese Antz Story.

2. "Whether" is used when comparing two things. "If" does not. For example, "Whether you come or go I don't care". "If you go I don't care."
