Whats the meaning of 'Very' in this sentence?
Sentence: The very government that was actively suppressing opportunity for persons of color was directly creating it for whites.
In this sentence, very means the exact same. The sentence indicates that the government is treating the two groups in opposing ways. So it is hard to believe the very (or the exact same) government is taking opposite positions.
