The correct answer was 'I read the newspaper' Diary and Newspaper are the same in Spanish though? How would I have know which to use?

leer el diario is a common expression; and reading someone's personal diary is not an everyday occurrence. "Periodico" is another word for newspaper in some Spanish-speaking countries. Always pay attention to the context of the sentence to try and decipher the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary. Also, be aware that "Leo el diario" means "I am reading the newspaper." We do not have to use the predicate form, estoy leyendo el diario, because leo el diario implies that we are doing it now. Buena suerte!

Hi Keith, In my opinion, your answer was right. You know, there are tests on internet that aren't exact. I hope you undesrtand what I mean. In Spanish: - diario = dairy - periódico = newspaper - revista = magazine But, it's true, as Andrew said, sometimes in Spanish we use word "diario" to refer to newspaper, in the sense you could buy and read it "everyday" (daily). So, by context, you should know if diario could mean newspaper or dairy. Is there a context in your test? I don't think so. So, your answer it is not really wrong.

Yes, the Spanish word "diario" has several meanings. Among others: diario = periódico (sust.) (newspaper), diario personal (sust.) (diary), de repetición cada 24 horas (adj.) (daily). But in the example "Yo leo el diario", i'd say it refers clairly to a newspaper, because when we use the word "diario" with the sense of "dairy" we usually use a possessive: Leo mi diario Leo su diario Leo tu diario, Escribo mi diario. Todas las noches escribo en mi diario. Por las mañanas leo mi diario.... And the example "Yo leo el diario" without any possessive, I'd say everyone would assume that we are talking about a newspaper. Sorry about my English!
