Pace Shakespeare What does the word "pace" mean here? I know it's a Latin word which originally means "sorry". (Or something to that effect?) Does it have the similar usage like "with due respect", namely it's applied to politely express a dissenting opinion? By the by, how to pronounce the word here? Should it be pronounced just as the normal English word pace or in a Latin way?

In common English, "pace" means the rate of speed and is a noun. It's uncommonly used as preposition (in your example), where it takes the modern Italian pronunciation: pah-chay. It literally means "peace". It means you politely disagree with the other person. "Sorry, Bill! Take a chill pill." You really wouldn't use it unless you were speaking in a purely literary or oratory sense.

Oops, the other person who responded did point out that it means you politely disagree with a person...but he is absolutely right that this is only used in academic papers...and even then is really not very common.

I was looking up this very question and I am afraid the person who responded may be mistaken. You are not asking about the English word "pace" but the Latin and/or Italian word "pace." I have often seen the latter used in academic English as a way of indicating that one politely disagrees with the person mentioned. So I think in those cases it means something like "even though Shakespeare said it" or "in spite of what Shakespeare thinks." For example, one might say "Pace Thomas Jefferson, all men are not created equal" or "Pace William Shakespeare, all the world's not a stage" or "Pace Henry Ford, history is not bunk' etc.
