In an example such as "we watched a film/movie" there is no difference between the words. My personal feeling is that the word "movie" is used more by americans and "film" is used more by british, but both words are totally acceptable.

The word film can also be used to describe the actual rolls of film cameras use.
But when referring to films/movies, the difference between the two is that "film" is less informal than "movie."
