Deafness comes in degrees or percentages of hearing loss.
Total deafness is what you are thinking.

Yeah, in English we usually say "how are you?" or "how do you feel?". When talking about thoughts, it isn't "how are you thinking?", because this has a different meaning. We say "what are you thinking?" or "what do you think?" :)
