Which is correct: Were you there? You were there? Hello everybody, I think that most grammar books consider 'were you there?' as the correct construction, but lately I have heard 'You were there?' a couple of times, so I wanted to know if we can use either one of them. Thank you so much.

Both are correct constructions, but convey different meanings: "Were you there?" This is a simple request for information. "You were there?" This sort of question is usually asked with surprise -- in the speaker's voice and face. As in: "Did you hear the president visited the coffee shop next door today?" "Yeah. I was there, actually." "What??? You were there???" "Yeah. I'm one of his bodyguards." "You're a bodyguard???"

These forms are not interchangeable. Unlike Spanish, and other Latin languages, you cannot ask a question by simply adding a question mark to a statement or changing your intonation. The interrogative form exists, and you have to use it. In the case of modals, auxiliary verbs and the verb 'to be', this involves an inversion of the subject and object. The correct question form is 'Were you there?' The only time that a native English speaker would say 'You were there?' is to show surprise by repeating what we have just heard. For example, if your friend's grandad starting telling you about being in Dallas, Texas on the day that President Kennedy was assassinated, you might say 'You were there?'. In this situation you are echoing what he has just said, and you are asking him to confirm this surprising fact.

I believe both are usable, at least while speaking, but "Were you there?" is the correct one.

Besides expressing surprise, "You were there?" can also be used to request confirmation: "You were there?" Another example: "He ate all his vegetables?" This can express surprise, but it can also simply be a request for confirmation of something. "You understand this answer?"
