"I cleared my throat before speaking again: 말을 다시 하기 전에 나는 목을 가다듬었어요." Could you please tell me if these words and definitions are correct? Please explain the differences between them or the usages. Please use them in an example sentence or two. I want to understand how to use them :) To clear one’s throat: 목(청)을 가다듬다 To clear one’s throat: 헛기침(을_)하다 To keep coughing (to clear one’s throat): 칵칵거리다 Would this be used as a sound effect, such as in 만화 or on a variety show? "With repeated coughing (to clear one’s throat): 칵칵" If not, what would be the sound effect of someone coughing to clear their throat? In English, I guess we would write "Ahem!"Is one way more commonly used than another?

1)So if somebody was choking (maybe on a yummy piece of chicken), which word would you use? We use this expression "사레들다." when you get something caught in your windpipe and can't help coughing. 2)What if someone was nervous before giving a performance (such as a speech or singing a song) and cleared their throat? Which word would you use? In that situation, we usually use this expression "목을 가다듬다." Either 목(청)을 가다듬다 or 헛기침(을_)하다 is okay? "헛기침 하다" is possible but we usually prefer using the former expression(목(청)을 가다듬다) or 목청을 풀다 when you clear your though before singing a song or performing a speech. 3)And what is the difference between 목 and 목청? 목 means a throat while 목청 means vocal cords. They have different meanings but we can think "목" contains the meaning '목청". So you can choose either of them, when you face the moment you use that expression. However, we usually prefer using the expression containing the word "목", not "목청". - There is not enough room for explaining this, so I explained it to the new answer post. I hope this helps. : )

I cleared my throat before speaking again 잘 쓰셨습니다!^^ [Good job!] Could you please tell me if these words and definitions are correct? Please explain the differences between them or the usages. Please use them in an example sentence or two. I want to understand how to use them :) 1)To clear one’s throat: 목(청)을 가다듬다 “목청을 가다듬다”라는 말은 “목에서 소리를 내는 기관인 ‘성대’를 깨끗이 한다.”라는 의미입니다. [It means that you clean your vocal cords, which vibrates when you speak, in case that anything stuck in your throat will prevent sounds from your vocal cords from going well.] 2)To clear one’s throat: 헛기침(을)하다 “헛기침을 하다.”라는 말은 일부러 기침을 하여 목청을 가다듬는 동작을 일컫습니다. [This is an expression that describes the movement to clean your throat through a little coughing.] 3)To keep coughing (to clear one’s throat): 칵칵거리다 “칵칵거리다.”는 목청을 가다듬을 때 일부러 내는 그 소리를 묘사한 표현입니다. [This is an expression describing an sound that goes when you are intended to clear your throat.] [They are just different ways of expressing it. All these words say the same.] - Would this be used as a sound effect, such as in 만화 or on a variety show? "With repeated coughing (to clear one’s throat): 칵칵“ If not, what would be the sound effect of someone coughing to clear their throat? In English, I guess we would write "Ahem!" 네. 바로 그것입니다. [Yes, You hit on the nose!! “칵칵!” means “Ahem!”] I hope this helps.^^
