How do you say "fuente" (food recipient) in English? Hello Everybody, I am wondering what do you call a "fuente" in English. It is a recipient for food, usually for salad and cooking in an oven. I would appreciate your help. It's similar to a bowl, but I think it is not quite as deep. (see wikipedia link) https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuente_(recipiente) Thank you,

Based on the pictures in the Wikipedia article, we would call it a "serving platter."

Thank you guys. I will try and use the most "ambigously convenient" in this case. I don't think dish fits really well for what I want to describe, because I want to differentiate what "fuente" from "plato" (which we normally translate as "dish"). Still, your comments were really helpful :). Thanks a lot!!!

I'm not sure how general a word you're looking for, Marco, but 'platter' and 'serving platter' are quite limited. Platters are large flat plates which you use only to serve food - for example, you might put sandwiches or pastries on a platter at a party. You don't cook or bake using a platter - platters don't go in the oven. And I think that 'tray' is the wrong word, too. A tray (una bandeja) is completely flat, and is only used only for carrying food. You don't normally put food directly on a tray. With respect to Jason and John, I still maintain that 'dish' is your best translation. As I said, a dish is a bowl that simply isn't as deep. And you can take that from someone who has cooked more hot dinners, than ...well..most people have had hot dinners. Sorry, English idiom there :).

Nothing complicated! The word you are looking for is simply 'DISH'. A dish is shallower than a bowl, but deeper than a plate. You can get dishes you can serve from, eat from, and ovenproof dishes that you can cook in. (By the way the word 'recipient' can't be used in this context in English.)

I agree, 'serving platter', 'serving tray', or just 'platter' or 'tray'
