Question about meaning of the word, capacity Hi. While I was filling out an application, I got some problem with understanding the meaning of 'capacity' You have indicated that you will be studying in some capacity while in the United States. In this sentence how can I understand the meaning of "be studying in some capacity"? Does that mean role? Thank you.

Hi, Hongju, I understand that as " to some extent". You will be studying as much as is allowed or as much as is possible, to a certain degree, somewhat. Hope that was helpful!

You are correct--one of the definitions of capacity is "a specified role or position."

Exactly. In what capacity were you studying? Oh, I was just an intern for Google for six months. As part of that, I did some courses. This describes in what capacity you studied. . The common interpretation of "to some degree" is natural, as "the role taken" is similar to "the degree" but this interpretation is not the primary meaning.

The simplest way to think of it as "You have indicated that you will do some type of study while in the United States". It is then likely that they will ask you what that the nature of that of study is... (as a student in a university, as part of job-related training course, etc).
