If someone is called a pig, what does this mean? When someone calls other human a pig in English, what is the meaning of it? I have also heard this word been said regarding some objects that didn't work properly. So, what kind of attitude to people and objects does this word express? If you call someone pig in Russian, this means that a person is physically dirty, or extremely rude, or has destroyed something or has made some other harm, or hasn't been grateful enough for what we've done for him or her, and we hate him or her for all that. But I am guessing it has a slightly different connotation in English.

I would add that although calling someone a pig is rude, it does not have the same force as it would in a country where a pig is considered religiously unclean. It can be quite mild between people who know each other well, more like telling someone they are being annoying. There is also the expression "greedy pig" which is not really an insult when people know each other well and it is said in a joking manner. Best to stay away from the calling someone a pig if you are not a native speaker.

Aud, it's not a rude phrase. You could substitute other words in the "It's a **** of a job" phrase, and maybe we could do that off this page, but not here So, 'it's a pig of a job' or 'he's a pig of a man' or 'he's such a pig, the way he treats women/difficult clients" are not rude, but they are not the most diplomatic way to say something. It depends who you are talking to - your boss, or a co-worker. More examples. This (task) is such a pig of a job, it's all messed up and difficult. This bolt is a pig/is such a pig, I can't get it out. The *** won't move. These can be used for people and for situations.

"A pig of a person' or 'that guy is a pig" can mean the same as in Russian, being dirty, without grace/gracefulness, being rude, etc. "a pig of a job/task' or a 'pig of a situation' is a problematical task or situation. Pigs are said to be dirty creatures, wallowing around in mud, eating all sorts of scraps and unhealthy things out of rubbish and from the soil/dirt. So the same meaning applies if you call a person a pig. No need to hate people, Aud. Even if they are pigs, slovenly, or plain evil. Love your enemies, do good to all those who hate you.
