Buddy, when used by close friends is exactly as the people above say, it means close friend. However, sometimes people who don't know you well will call to you 'hi buddy' as a greeting. Since buddy is usually used between close friends, when people use 'hi buddy' as a greeting it can sometimes come off as insincere.

A buddy is a close friend. Mostly used to refer to males. It is also a friend on messenger clients and refers to both sexes.

Buddy is a term that means friend, usually just boys. Friend is a much more common term, and works better in most situations. To me, buddy sounds a bit childish, it is used more around children. On the other hand, buddy is not always used to mean friend, such as "Hey, watch it, buddy!". This phrase can be used when another male person is being careless, and reckless, and putting you, someone else, or something in danger..
