Both are adjectives that can describe society or social relations and can often be used interchangeably. But social has an additional meaning that can describe an individual person while societal cannot.

"Societal" means to relate to the society. "Social" has the same meaning, but it has other meanings as well. It depends on how you use it in a sentence. Below are a few examples. "She is a very social person". She is a pleasant and outgoing person. "He thinks a lot about his social status". He thinks about his ranking and wealth in society.
