Platon stiller ofte spørsmålet "Hva er noe?" i dialogene sine. Ved å stille dette spørsmålet får han ofte samtalepartnerne til å innse at de ikke har full forståelse av hva noe er, selv om de har delvis forståelse. Å være klar over sin ufullstendige erkjennelse er det første steget på veien til sannheten i filosofien. På samme måte som i antikken spør også dagens moderne idrettsfilosofer, i likhet med Platon, "Hva er sport?", eller mer presist, "Hva er god sport?". Et av Platon's beste svar på dette spørsmålet finnes trolig i grunnleggende konsepter i hans filosofi om den hierarkiske inndelingen av staten og menneskesjelen i tre deler. Siden sport stammer fra mennesket, kan også godheten i sport deles inn i tre stadier. Det laveste stadiet av sport svarer til den første delen av sjelen - den lystne sjelen. På dette stadiet er sport basert på å oppnå materielle goder gjennom premiene som vinnes i konkurranser....

Hva er god sport ( ifølge Platon )

It was New Year’s Eve. 

A few friends had got together to celebrate at a cute little house. They were talking about their previous year, laughing about what had gone right and what had gone wrong. 

There was music playing from a stereo in the corner. The friends were almost yelling at each other because the music was so loud. 

“Jack, ol’ Jacky boy, get me another drink, will you?” a man said to his friend.

“Uggh, ok, but you’re getting the next one,” Jack replied. 

Jack drunkenly walked into the kitchen and switched on the light. It was a long, white light, very bright. The large refrigerator was in front of him. He opened it and saw many bottles of wine, orange juice, coca cola and water. He grabbed two bottles of wine from inside the door.  

But before he closed the fridge, he saw on the top shelf something white, red, and creamy.  

“Hey! Susan!” Jack yelled. “This cake looks absolutely delicious! Can I eat some?”

Susan came in from the living room. “Get your filthy hands away from it, Jack. It’s only 8pm. We’ll eat it after the countdown. Just wait.” 

She walked over to Jack, grabbed him by the arm and walked him back into the living room. Jack was happily holding the two bottles of wine under his arms. 

Now that the humans had gone, the foods in the fridge continued their celebration. 

“Psst, Pavlova,” a bottle of orange juice whispered. “He’s gone. Keep going.” 

Pavlova opened her eyes and continued singing an amazing opera song. She sung Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. 

All the foods and drinks in the fridge were in love with Pavlova’s voice. After she had finished, they clapped and cheered. 

“Bravo! Bravo!” a cheese said. “Sing another one!”

扉の裏側には、
「ネクタイピン、カフスボタン、眼鏡、財布、その他金物類、
　ことに尖ったものは、みんなここに置いてください」
と書いてありました。扉のすぐ横には黒塗りの立派な金庫も、ちゃんと口を開けて置いてありました。鍵まで添えてあったのです。
「ははあ、何かの料理に電気をつかうと見えるね。金気のものはあぶない。ことに尖ったものはあぶないと斯云うんだろう。」
「そうだろう。して見ると勘定は帰りにここで払うのだろうか。」
「どうもそうらしい。」
「そうだ。きっと。」
　二人は眼鏡をはずしたり、カフスボタンをとったり、みんな金庫のなかに入れて、ぱちんと錠をかけました。
　すこし行きますとまた扉があって、その前に硝子の壺が一つありました。扉には斯書いてありました。
「壺のなかのクリームを顔や手足にすっかり塗ってください。」
　みるとたしかに壺のなかのものは牛乳のクリームでした。
「クリームをぬれというのはどういうんだ。」
「これはね、外がひじょうに寒いだろう。室のなかがあんまり暖いとひびがきれるから、その予防なんだ。どうも奥には、よほどえらいひとがきている。こんなとこで、案外ぼくらは、貴族とちかづきになるかも知れないよ。」
　二人は壺のクリームを、顔に塗って手に塗ってそれから靴下をぬいで足に塗りました。それでもまだ残っていましたから、それは二人ともめいめいこっそり顔へ塗るふりをしながら喰べました。
　それから大急ぎで扉をあけますと、その裏側には、
「クリームをよく塗りましたか、耳にもよく塗りましたか、」
と書いてあって、ちいさなクリームの壺がここにも置いてありました。
「そうそう、ぼくは耳には塗らなかった。あぶなく耳にひびを切らすとこだった。ここの主人はじつに用意周到だね。」
「ああ、細かいとこまでよく気がつくよ。ところでぼくは早く何か喰べたいんだが、どうも斯うどこまでも廊下じゃ仕方ないね。」
　するとすぐその前に次の戸がありました。
「料理はもうすぐできます。
　十五分とお待たせはいたしません。
　すぐたべられます。
　早くあなたの頭に瓶の中の香水をよく振りかけてください。」
　そして戸の前には金ピカの香水の瓶が置いてありました。
　二人はその香水を、頭へぱちゃぱちゃ振りかけました。
　ところがその香水は、どうも酢のような匂いがするのでした。
「この香水はへんに酢くさい。どうしたんだろう。」
「まちがえたんだ。下女が風邪でも引いてまちがえて入れたんだ。」
　二人は扉をあけて中にはいりました。
