Episode #47 - New learning

There are 6 tones in Cantonese, tone 1 to 6, let's split them into 3 groups.
Group 1: tone1/ Group 2: tone2 and 5/ Group 3: tone3, 4 and 6
Group 1:
Tone 1 is the easiest tone to find, it equals to stressed syllables in English or other Western languages, for example, father has 2 syllables, one is fa, the other is ther, the first one fa is stressed, because it's higher in pitch, this sound exactly equals to tone 1 in Cantonese.For example I want to pronounce: tik1 (means tick in Cantonese), let's pronounce ticking first, ticking has 2 syllables, the first is stressed, so ti is tik1.
Group 2:
Tone 2 and 5 are both rising tones and are the same in question tones, like WHAT? WHERE? WHO? So to find these 2 tones, you just need to pronounce "WHAT?" then you got the correct tones!
However, what are the differences between tone 2 and 5? Well, you want to be very strict, tone 2 is relatively higher compared to tone 5, but actually when local people are speaking, to speak faster, they will omit details while talking in conversations, so you can just treat these 2 tones as the same tone.For example, if you want to pronounce hou2 (means good in Cantonese), we pronounce WHAT? first, then use the pitch of WHAT? you can find hou2 very easily.
Group3:
Similarly, just like tone 2 and 5, because these 3 tones are so close to each other and quite familiar too, so when talking in conversations, they sound just like the same tone. These 3 tones are just like our unstressed syllables, let's take father as the example again. The second syllable ther is not stressed, and this equals to tone 3, 4 or 6 in Cantonses.For example, if you want to pronounce daap3 (means take transportation in Cantonese), you can produce Linda first, Lin is stressed and da isn't, here da is our tone 3 for daap.

En un pequeño pueblo llamado Villa Verde vivía una niña llamada Ana. Ana tenía ocho años y le encantaban los animales. Su mascota favorita era un gato negro llamado Noche. Noche era un gato muy curioso y siempre estaba explorando el jardín de Ana. Un día, Ana se despertó y no encontró a Noche en su cama. Se preocupó mucho porque Noche nunca se iba muy lejos. Ana buscó por toda la casa, pero Noche no estaba en ninguna parte. Entonces decidió salir a buscarlo por el pueblo. Primero, Ana fue a la panadería de don Pedro. Don Pedro era un señor amable que siempre le daba a Ana un panecillo cuando lo visitaba.
Ana: Buenos días, don Pedro. ¿Ha visto a mi gato Noche?
Don Pedro: Hola, Ana. No lo he visto hoy. Pero puedes preguntar en la tienda de la señora Rosa. Tal vez ella lo haya visto.
Ana agradeció a don Pedro y corrió hacia la tienda de la señora Rosa. La tienda estaba llena de cosas interesantes, desde dulces hasta juguetes.
Ana: Buenos días, señora Rosa. ¿Ha visto a mi gato Noche?
Señora Rosa: Hola, Ana. No, no lo he visto, pero puedes preguntar en la plaza. A veces los gatos van allí a jugar.
Ana salió de la tienda y se dirigió a la plaza del pueblo. Allí vio a muchos niños jugando y también a su amigo Luis.
Ana: Hola, Luis. ¿Has visto a mi gato Noche?
Luis: ¡Hola, Ana! No, no lo he visto. Pero podemos buscarlo juntos. ¡Vamos!
Ana y Luis buscaron por toda la plaza, pero no encontraron a Noche. De repente, escucharon un maullido suave que venía de un arbusto grande.
Ana: ¡Escucha, Luis! ¡Creo que es Noche!
Los dos amigos se acercaron al arbusto y, efectivamente, allí estaba Noche. El gato estaba atrapado entre unas ramas. Luis y Ana lo ayudaron a salir y Noche se veía muy contento de ver a su dueña.
Ana: ¡Gracias, Luis! Estoy muy feliz de haber encontrado a Noche. Vamos a casa.
Ana y Luis caminaron de regreso a casa de Ana con Noche en los brazos. Ana estaba muy agradecida por la ayuda de su amigo y prometió ser más cuidadosa para que Noche no volviera a perderse.
