I think you could replace the word “bananas” with “nuts” in the above examples and they would all make sense! (Example 2 should be preposition “at” - “my mum went nuts at what I told her”). We say “to go nuts” meaning to get really angry/go crazy (in a bad way) We can say go bananas like this sometimes but bananas can also have a positive meaning. Examples: “The child goes bananas every time he’s allowed to go to the playground” (means the child is really excited - going crazy but in an excited way) “My dog goes bananas for those biscuits” (means my dog loves the biscuits and gets really excited when he can eat one). Confusingly, if you say “to BE nuts about something” it has a positive meaning. Example to show difference: “He WENT nuts at her” - he was really angry and shouting at her “He IS nuts about her” - he is in love with her 😂 You could also say “he went bananas at her” to mean he shouted at her, but I’d say it’s more common to use bananas when you mean something positive/if one is trying to be funny - to go bananas doesn’t sound as serious as to go nuts (to me anyway). I think “nuts” is more common than “bananas” - be interesting to see what others say in case this is a regional thing! 😁
