The concept of “ontological guilt”.
Today in an episode of a psycjological podcast called “Three points”, I heard about the concept of “ontological guilt”, that was described by Russian psychologist and writer Irina Mlodik. In short, it is a sense of guilt of unrealized potential.
Each of us generally has a lot of potential. And from time to time we can realize that we are living the life that we didn’t dream of.
It might be very difficult to cope with these thoughts, but ignoring these anxious thoughts can lead us to permanent irritation, frustration and even to depression. To cope with these feelings people can become addicted to alcohol or other substances.
The author of the concept suggests trying new things to make life more diverse when it comes to experience. Luckily modern cities provide a huge number of different experiences, such as art, dancing, singing classes, playing sports or learning martial arts. Trying new things can indeed give a feeling of self realization, but it probably doesn’t work for everyone.
What’s more important is to try to find what you’re looking for, how you want to live your life. We definitely need to think about it, keeping in mind that we only live once. .
Thank you!
