Prejudiced/biased—what's the difference? Please, if you try to explain it to me, try to do that simply, because I've already googled and still don't understand the difference from the long and complicated explanations.

Let's think of it in terms of a decision made in a trial in a court of law by a judge or jury. "Bias" is a tendency to make a judgement in a certain way, in spite of the facts. A good judge or jury does not make biased judgements. A sound judgement is made on the basis of evidence alone, but in a biased judgement the decision is made on the basis of what the judge or jury want the decision to be, unrelated to the facts. The possible reasons for making a biased judgement are many. One such possible reason is "prejudice", which means that the judge or jury already (before the trial) did not like the convicted person for reasons unrelated to the crime.

Mr. White gave a great answer. You could also think of it in this way: bias is in favor of something or someone and prejudice is agaisnt someone.

Ohhhhhh this is a difficult one! Basically bias is a form of prejudice I think the simplest way to think of it is this...prejudice is meaning it, its something you think through. Bias is more of an unconscious thought, you don't always realise you're doing it A teacher sees two students fighting. He knows and likes one of them but doesn't know the other. He immediately decides the boy he doesn't know must have started the fight. So he is BIASED in his decision about who to blame But if one of the boys was black and he was a bad person who didn't like black people, and therefore he decided to blame this boy for starting the fight, we'd say he was PREJUDICED. Because he had a horrible prejudice in his life against black people.

Sometimes things are better explaned in examples rather than definitions, so here is an example- Bias- If given a choice, Coach Bob prefers to chose boys for his team because that is who he prefers to work with. He has coached both boy and girl teams but thinks boy teams are easier to coach based on his past experiences. There were personal experiences that influenced this bias. Because of this bias, he may miss out on coaching an awesome group of girls because every group is different. If Bob recognizes that he feels a positive bias towards boys and negative bias towards girls, he might want to pay extra attention to not let his bias affect his decisions. Prejudice- Coach Bob choses boys for his team because he believes girls are inferior. He believes that girls are weaker and disorganized. He believes this is fact. He did not himself have negative experiences with girls, but his dad told him girls were weak, and his grandpa said girls were weak, and his uncle said girls were weak, so it just seems to be common knowledge. Bob may not even recognize that he is prejudiced. He will likely miss out on working with an awesome team of girls because he has a deep belief that are inferior.

‘Bias’ generally refers to factors that go into decision-making. They don’t have to be negative and they don’t have to involve prejudice, but they sometimes do. The team selection this year is biased in favor of speed. The coach felt the team was too slow last year. (A reasonable bias, but still a bias) ‘Prejudice’ has various uses. It’s used as a legal term with various meanings. More colloquially it is an opinion that isn’t based on evidence or sound reasoning. They aren’t necessarily false, and don’t necessarily lead to biased conduct, but they could. In some contexts the word has such a negative connotation that we’d likely use different words for prejudices that are true and/or harmless.
