Please, help to find a definition

Hello everyone:)

After searching all over the internet for the definition of "barring surgery" I failed to find any.

Can you, please, tell what kind of surgery is that?

barring - preposition
1. unless (something) occurs; except for: e.g., barring rain, the match will be held tomorrow.

synonyms: besides, excepting, omitting, short of, excluding (not including), with the excption of, aside from, other than...

So, barring surgery means 'except for surgery OR not including surgery OR excluding surgery, and it could be used in a sentence such as, "Barring surgery, there is no hope that the patient will live" which means that the patient will die if he/she does not receive surgery because surgery is the only way to save the patient.

Preston and Richard, thank you very much!

Richard, so then I guessed correctly. This possible meaning - "excluding surgery" came to my mind the second I read Preston's answer.

It's not actually a type of surgery. Barring is a word used in many expressions. It means something along the lines of: 'with the exception of' or 'but for'.

"Barring accidents, the whole team should be fit for Saturday."

"With the exception of / but for accidents, the whole team should be fit for Saturday.

'Barring a miracle' is often used.
