Scheduling a lesson with a tutor now would be fine.  Look through the list of Spanish teachers and look for ones that can also speak English.  Make sure that you listen to the teacher's intro video.  They will probably have half of their intro video in Spanish and half in English.  Listen to the English of the teacher carefully.  Can you understand the teacher's English?  The teacher will be explaining things to you in English; you have to be able to understand him.

Some tutors seem to be able to answer general questions about grammar, but others seem to have no clue.  Even if you end up with a tutor who is clueless about your grammar questions, it can still be a worthwhile experience.  I would recommend that you send them a message before the lesson.  My suggestion would be that you read a story in Spanish at a beginner level.  You can pick the story, or your teacher can pick it for you.  Fairy tales are nice, since you know how the story goes already.  Your tutor can help you with pronunciation.  Also, they will be able to speak English well enough that they can help you if you are totally lost with the story.

I waited until I felt I could have a basic conversation before I contacted a teacher. I regret this massively, because I would have been able to speak and communicate several months earlier.

My advice would be to bite the bullet and choose a teacher for one lesson - you´ll then be able to see how well it works for you.

Before most of my lessons with a new tutor, I look at their video, teacher profile and student profile. From this I make a list of topics of conversation (where they are from, their interests (especially interests in common), if they have an interest in a particular sport or perhaps if they note what their job is outside of italki).

I find talking about the weather in the teacher´s city is a good ice breaker at the start of a lesson and can often lead to other conversations (e.g. the geography of their country or its culture).

¡Buena suerte!

Teachers that speak English can help, but can also slow you down. I started as a complete beginner here and for my first lessons I had teachers who would explain things to me in English, but I decided to switch to teachers who would only speak Spanish to me and I progressed a lot faster. It all depends on how you like to learn. If you come across the right teachers, you can definitely start as a complete beginner. If you need any teacher recommendations, you can send me a message.

This is what I think it's an outline for a first lesson:

Create a list of rescue sentences (Could you repeat? Could you write that down?)

Introduce yourself

Share your language goals

Talk about your hobbies
