SOLO travel on the rise: Why more Asian women travel alone?
I spoke to a young, Asian woman who is about to embark on her first solo travel to Europe. Her eyes show both excitement and fear. You could see that she is excited to see the world. Over the past few decades, there is an increased number of Asian women traveling alone, I am one of those. Solo traveling is not something encouraged in my culture. In fact, it is highly discouraged. I was browsing Facebook when I came across the blog of Kach, a Filipina Pinay solo traveler who has an adventurous and cheerful demeanor. Her stories encouraged me to try it out, it was basically out of curiosity. SOLO traveling is very common in the west but not in Asia,it is only during the past decade that people slowly accepted it because of several travel bloggers who gained fame because of solo travel.
While speaking to the young lady today, I was curious why she decided to do it. Did she read a blog? Did she do it out of curiosity? So, I asked her the reason why she is traveling alone. She said with a smile, “ I have one month vacation and all my friends have to do their thesis and so my friends do not have the time.” I can relate to her reason because I know a few people who have one month or even two weeks to travel, most people have limited time.

Another aspect is economics or the financial aspect. More Asian women work harder than before and pay attention to their careers. The aspect of saving and investing money also became more popular because an individualistic lifestyle is also expensive. I also encountered women who travel alone because they want to improve their personalities, they came from sheltered families of they want to go beyond the usual routine. I am happy to meet a lot of female solo travelers online and offline. However, there is an underlying reason, more and more young people no longer feel the need for relationships or traveling with a friend or even family. Is it good? Yes and No! Why? Although I am independent and I encourage others to be, we must also travel with others. You can’t appreciate solo travel without experiencing traveling with a group. You can learn from both experiences.

@Troglodyte Well said Trog. That is why I read a lot, knowledge is power. Knowing what scams to avoid and certain traditions or rules to uphold is extremely important. This is the age of technology and yes both males and females face a lot of risk when traveling alone, it is a matter of preparation, perspective and most importantly common sense.

It is also a trend now for many young male and female individuals to travel solo. People are now using internet and are familiar with many social media sites and consuming tons of contents related to travel and tourist places. Travelling is a luxurious affair and that's why many people love to do it if they can afford and get rid of all the constraints around them as you mentioned one(that females are not allowed to travel solo in most of the Asian societies).
In my view, travelling places, meeting different people, knowing their language and culture, trying their food and beverages are no doubt an amazing experiences which broaden our mind and sweeten our heart.
Now, talking about the solo travelling, well, everything comes with a risk factor. So, even if you are a male solo traveler, you may face difficulties, however, we can't deny the fact that female solo travel may have a bit more risk factor. But having a prior knowledge about the place you are traveling to will definitely lower that risk factor. And I am sure nowadays it is absolutely possible to get information about the places without any hustle.

@Joe Good points. I agree with the feminism part. There was a time when women rely too much on others however a lot of women of the last few decades paved the way to be the perfect role models, I cannot say that they are pure feminist because some are married. However, they encourage others to follow suit, especially to achieve feats that are usually just done by men. In my sports alone, there are women who are ultra fast, as fast as men or even faster. More Asian women also join sports now like Triathlon and improve their physique, stamina and endurance.

I think everyone is traveling more solo (not just Asian women). Everyone = every combination of gender + race.

One factor is that the developing and developed world are becoming more career obsessed, everyone is getting so much busier, so it is harder to find friends who are available to take a vacation during the same exact week or month as you. Inevitably, it means that you have to go about it on your own.

Another factor is the availability of information on the internet about which cities and tour sites are safe vs. unsafe, and what to look for while there. This removes a lot of the mystery and danger of ending up in the wrong neighborhood.

As for women traveling more solo, it's definitely at least partially fueled by feminism (women can be independent, women can make their own decisions, women can be confident, etc)

There are some others, but those are the ones that I can think of right now.
