English homework. Hello everybody. I need help with my English homework. New topic is "used to" and "would" to talk about a past habit. By the way, I didn't know that "would" was for past too. I only knew the conditional use. Anyway, I'll copy the whole excercise, and then, my attempt to solve it. 1 - Cross out the alternative which is not possible. a) I [used to play / played / play] a lot of tennis when I was younger. b) After school I [would take / used to take / take] the bus home. c) He [never used to play / would play / played ] the guitar, but he doesn't play anymore. d) Tim [used to have / would have / had] long hair. e) I [studied / used to study / didn't use to study] French for five years. My answers. a) I [used to play / played / xxxxx] a lot of tennis when I was younger. b) After school I [would take / used to take / xxxx] the bus home. c) He [xxxxxxx / would play / played ] the guitar, but he doesn't play anymore. d) Tim [used to have / would have / xxxxx] long hair. e) I [studied / xxxxx / xxxxxxx] French for five years. According to excercise, it says "the alternative" so, I supose it's only one, but in the last one I think both are incorrect. What do you say? Do I approve? Thanks in advance!

Hi, when we talk about past habits 'would' and 'used to' have the same meaning, but, the difference is that would can not be used with non action verbs for example: It is correct to say When I was a child, I would ride a bike = When I was a child, I used to ride a bike Here 'ride' implies an action e.g. movement. but it is INCORRECT to say When I was a teenager, I would love listening to rock music. The correct form in this case HAS to be with 'used to' When I was a teenager, I used to love listening to rock music.
