Japanese anime vs American cartoons I don't consider myself an "otaku" but I do like japanese anime. Do I like it more than american cartoons? The answer is yes. American cartoons represent my childhood , growing up in the border with USA and having available like 8 or 10 english channels on the TV was the best way to watch all the cartoons that were popular in the USA at the momment. And I am very grateful that in one way or another watching cartoons in english helped me to unconsciously learn a little bit more everyday about the language. And of course I also watched american cartoons in spanish. Now about the anime cartoons they came to my life when I was a teenager , watching animes like Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball , and Captain Tsubasa. I remember my first impressions about anime cartoons. The first one I saw was Saint Seiya, and I was impressed with the designs of the characters. By the time american cartoons were all about weird things that we got used to see as normal, for example the designs of characters like the flinstones or the Jetsons , for me is hard to remember american cartoons in where humans look like well...humans. Some cartoons from the 80s were on the right path like He-Man and Bravestar , but most of the american cartoons are animals who talk and act like humans. And I am not saying that cartoons must be like real life, but american cartoons are worse everytime. Some examples are squarepants bob, the powerpuff girls, dexter , rugrats, and others. Not only they don't look like humans anymore , the designs are very simple. When I compared american cartoons to japanese there is certainly a huge difference. In Saint Seiya the characters designs were amazing, and everyone of the 88 Saints had a different armor , the way the hair of each character moves and the scenarios gave me an idea of what I was missing. And that is only on the design of characters if we talk about the stories well... it is very simple american cartoons are stupid. No I am not angry with american cartoons , but now when I look at them with another perspective I realize how lame they were. For example Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtles , I was a big fan , mostly cause I like ninjas. But if i try to watch one episode nowdays omg not only the stories were lame, the action scenes are nothing to what you can find in anime cartoons. And as an example I can say Dragon Ball, it has some of the best action sequences. The truth is that american cartoons are mostly about comedy ...
