“What a wonderful world” is a song written by Bob Thiele and performed and first recorded by Louis Amstrong in 1967. Some of its verses say: “I see friends shaking hands Saying how do you do They’re really saying I love you” I like the song. In fact I think is a delightful one, though It’s not one of my favourites songs of all times, if you know what I mean, but anybody can recognise in its lyrics the celebration of the beautiful things of the world. But in reference with these particular verses I wonder whether Thiele, when wrote them, was tripping out or he honestly thought that people have that in mind.

I heard this song playing a lot in Europe recently.

'To trip out' is to start behaving erratically after ingesting some kind of psychedelic drug. Like when someone sees and hears things that aren't really there.

Good job. I never thought of that line as tripping out. I've always interepretted that to mean they love each other in the sense that friends do, as sort of a brotherhood of humanity. It's not that they are consciously thinking "I love you," just that they are feeling benevelont. That's my opinion at least.
