Difference between "patronizing" and "condescending" ? can anyone tell me the difference between the two words patronizing and condescending? I watched a video clip of Jimmy Kimmel show in that Hillary Clinton and Jimmy talked about mansplaining. Hillary said it is when a man is explaining something to a woman in a patronizing way. then, Jimmy said it is actually man's explaining in a condescending way. can anyone explain for me about this? thank you

To patronize someone is talk to someone in a way as if he is not intelligent enough to know (about something) , and that you know better/ or to talk kindly to someone just to show you are better . > My mum always patronize me with her advice as if I don't know them already ( She talk to you as if you are not intelligent to know) > Don't worry , you will pass it next time . Please don't patronize me > When you think she doesn't actually mean it but just to show she is better ( maybe she passed and you didn't) Talk condescendingly to someone > to talk in a way that give the impression that you are superior or better . > What a beautiful little car you bought .You should be happy with it . I hope I can buy one too. The person saying that could be condescending in speech because his compliment is not real .It is to tell you indirectly that his car (which you know he has ) is far more expensive than yours.

알지도 못하는 것들이 감히 아버지 앞에서 가들가들 가르치려 든다 --> To patronize (어감: 우수하는 느낌) 영어로는 I dared to patronize my father with things he didn't know 뜻이 된다. A very common expression --> "Don't patronize me" --> don't act superior to me. 원래 그는 한국에 왔을 때 꽤 거들먹거린다 --> To condescend/ To be condescending to someone (어감: 오만하는 느낌) 영어로는 When he first came to Korea, he was quite condescending/ arrogant 뜻이 된다. A very common expression --> "When you speak, don't be condescending" --> Don't be arrogant in front of someone arrogance --> Even though you know, you don't care. 알아도 상관이 없다 Ignorant --> because you haven't been informed, you don't know. 알리지 않아서 모르다. Hope this helps.

Patronizing and condescending are somewhat similar. Patronizing is when someone appears to speak kindly or give you credit for an accomplishment but they say it in such a way that it is clear they are really insulting you. Condescending is to express a low opinion of someone else's knowledge or opinion. An example would be to talk to an adult the way you would speak to a child.
