Hello, as far as I know Chinese Northerners and Southerners are holding very different attitudes towards tea. You might know that most of tea are produced from the south, tea to the southerners thus was more approachable and cheaper, and eventually the southerners form the habit of drinking tea. while the tea culture on the North only spread among the upper class like officers and intellectuals. So drinking tea to some southerns is just a part of life, while to the Northerners more like a dying tradition.
Southern cities mostly can grow and process their own tea, those tea might not famous, but it is the taste that locals get used to the most. To me a cup of tea from my hometown just like a time machine which could take me back to my childhood. While the places can't grow their own tea will choose to drink those famous tea. Some teas, like Biluochun/Tieguanyin/Pu'er, etc, are beloved all across the country.
we usually call the place that exclusively for drinking tea as "Cha Guan", but actually such Cha Guan is never a part of our tradition. When the Chinese drinking tea, we prefer either drinking alone or with just two or three friends, anyhow a *private zone* is necessary for drinking tea. Places like a tea house, crowded, public, smells like commercialized and exaggerated, will never be attractive.
