There ARE differences between Catholic and Protestant translations, as there are differences between any two translations. Different translations allow for different interpretations! The "Lutherbibel" is the standard translation used by the "evangelische" or protestant church in Germany. The "Einheitsübersetzung" is the standard work used by the Roman Catholic Church in Germany. PS I teach English and German, so if you'd like to learn either, please get in touch!

The Bible translation that German-speaking Roman Catholics use is called "die Einheitsübersetzung", as Gaveston wrote above. You can see the comparison of German Bible-translations here: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibel%C3%BCbersetzung#Textvergleich_deutschsprachiger_Bibelausgaben You can read them at http://www.bibleserver.com

I am not aware of any substantial difference between "Catholic bible" and "Protestant bible" for instance. For this reason it is not quite clear to me what the origin of your question actually is. In Germay you have basically two expressions for the bible. First of all, the literal translation the bible = die Bibel And then also expressions for the two parts of the bible: the Old Testament = das Alte Testament (AT) the New Testament = das Neue Testament (NT) Not quite sure though whether this answers your question... For more details see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibel#Die_christliche_Bibel Re Whispermane: The "Luther-Bibel" is the first German translation but if you want to give it a label it is *protestant*, not *catholic* (but I don't think anyway that this distinction makes sense if one is only concerned about the text, not it's interpretation)

The most common translations of the bible are "Luther-Bibel" which is somewhat longsyne's language and the "Einheitsübersetzung" which is newer.
