very vs fairly vs pretty vs somehow vs quite vs extremely vs really vs enough I would like to know the difference between the following intensifiers: very, fairly, pretty, somehow, quite, extremely, really, enough. I would like to know their difference based on how strong or intense they are. How much they make the meaning of that adjective or adverb more intense, more powerful, etc. I have the following list of sentences. 1. This black laptop is VERY good. 2. This red laptop is EXTREMELY good. 3. This blue laptop is REALLY good. 4. This yellow laptop is FAIRLY good. 5. This green laptop is SOMEHOW good. 6. This while laptop is QUITE good. 7. This pink laptop is PRETTY good. 8. This orange laptop is good ENOUGH. 9. This purple laptop is good. Since there is not a numeric value for each intensifier, I would like to get some help to order/arrange that list of sentences so I can see that way the level of intensity of each intensifier. I would like to order them from the strongest to the weakest.

This is how I would place the word order. 1. EXTREMELY good. (meaning exceedingly good and worthy of praise) 2. REALLY good. (meaning actually and honestly good, but can be emphasized and praised more by saying the word slowly. For example, "It is REEEEE LLY good".) 3. QUITE good. (meaning outstanding, often used when you are a bit surprised something is good) 4. PRETTY good. (meaning moderately good but worth taking note of) 5. FAIRLY good. (meaning moderately good, but you're not enthusiastic about it) 6. SOMEWHAT good. (not somehow, also meaning moderately good, but you still have some doubt) Hope this helps

Hi Jordi, What an interesting question! I must admit I've not seen a question phrased like this. So with regards to their (approximative) strength, I'd say: Strongest to Weakest: Extremely Very ~ Really (Really is perhaps ever so slightly weaker) Good Pretty Good (Perhaps slightly stronger than the 2 underneath) Fairly ~ Quite (Pretty equal) Good Enough (~ represents approximate equality) Somehow good is a bit different for me. It doesn't really express a 'strength' per se, but rather the fact that it is contrary to expectations, or that it is surprising that it is good. However, if you really wanted to classify it, I'd say it's somewhere along with Pretty Good. I hope this helps! Matt

I though of choosing Chris' and Andrew's answer as best answer but it was not possible. Since I have to choose one as the best one, I will choose Naomi's. Thanks, everyone, for your help. It was very useful.

I agree with Chris's order almost completely. The only thing I disagree is the position of "good" and "fairly/pretty". To me, the use of fairly/pretty softens the expression of just "good" and saying "fairly good" seems less intense. Other than that, I agree with everything else.

Just read Chris' comment. Somehow should be somewhat. :)
