Оба этих глагола имеют негативную окраску, но всё же немного разные. Disappointed - расстроен, upset - недоволен.

If you're disappointed, it means that what you found was worse than what you expected or wanted. Maybe you win a free car, but you'd be disappointed if it came without the engine. If you're upset, it means that something made you have a bad feeling, like disagreement. So disappointment implies that you already expected something, but being upset doesn't.

You are dissapointed when the forecast says it's going to be a beautiful sunny day tomorrow so you prepare to go to the beach but the next morning you wake up to a sound of the rain. Now you can be both disappointed and upset at the same time but "dissapointed" emphasizes the fact that you were really hoping for sth to happen but it didn't.

I see it this way: DISAPPOINTED can be used when one has expectations of something that was not met. As in, something ended up below one’s expectations. Example: I’m disappointed I didn’t get a good grade when I had studied so hard. Example: Our son is a total disappointment. All he does is sit around all day. UPSET is more of a negative feeling of sadness. It’s more of an intense sadness. It’s a little like devastated. Example: I feel upset he cheated on me. It can also be used to say that something went horribly wrong. Example: COVID 19 causes upset around the world.
