I agree with Nicole as far as this use of 'work' - I have wroked here for 5 years = I have been working here for 5 years.
However, it would not be correct to say "I work on an interesting project at the moment". We would say "I AM workING on an interesting project at the moment". It's not a habitual action, rather a temporary one at the present time.
So, you should say "I have been working on the project for the past few months".
Unless the verb is stative (e.g. love, want, believe), we use the present perfect progressive to say HOW LONG a continuing action has been happening.
