Sam

Everything is great from year to year.

Sam is ideal for obtaining a British accent (RP). His postgraduate education in phonetics and phonology makes a difference. He explains how you should locate the tongue, jaw etc. to produce the required sound and is ready to demonstrate MRIs of natives pronouncing it. When I couldn’t grasp how to do a so-called happy-tensing, he taught me spectrograms and formants to let numbers speak for themselves. It helped a lot. Sam speaks multiple languages. It is fascinating to discuss their differences with him and view my native language from a non-native perspective.

His attitude for my lesson was inappropriate; he took the lesson while lying on the bed. In addition, he sticked to my pronounce too much, so I had no enough opportunities to talk.

I've been taking lessons with Sam for about 3 months, he's helped me to make substantial progress in my Japanese, and I always look forwards to my lessons with him. He's helped me correct many bad habits I had picked up, and explains concepts in an easy to understand way, drawing on his experience both as a teacher and a language learner. I will be continuing my lessons with Sam, and recommending him to friends that wish to start studying Japanese more. Thanks Sam!

Working with Sam to improve my Japanese has been great - I have and will continue to recommend him to anyone that is serious about improving their language skills. We've had nearly 100 hours of lessons together now, and I've really felt the progress from it. I'm able to communicate much more clearly, and am using Japanese more in both my work and personal life. I've learnt a lot from Sam, and am looking forward to continuing lessons with him over the coming year. Sam is a great teacher who keeps the lessons fun while taking the learning aspect seriously. He explains not just how things work but why, which really helps me with understanding things. Not being a native speaker further reinforces this, as he understands the perspective of the student much more for it. Notably, he will always give you things to talk about when, or while, you're not able to come up with anything yourself (yet). I can feel my own improvement and it doesn't feel like a chore to take these lessons at all, which is what keeps me here. Highly recommend.
