This is a summary review after 22 lessons with Akram during Jan/Feb/Mar 2019:
I found Akram by searching Italki for a teacher of Levantine Arabic from Jordan who can teach in English and watching the video introduction and booking a 30 minute trial lesson. The trial lesson was via Skype and a great success so we continued.
For me Akram has been the perfect teacher. His English is very good, and he is 'techy' so he can do things such as writing on the Skype side-bar, send documents (teaching aids), pictures, and share-screen in real time during lessons. He has resources, ideas, experience (150+ lessons when I started), patience and a good voice.
My purpose was to learn in the local Arabic dialect for a holiday to Jordan and I had 76 days to do it. Akram has also been a travel advisor to me. We started with 2 lessons per week but later increased that as my holiday became closer. The Italki platform has been perfect; booking lessons, buying and managing credit in the student wallet, exchanging messages, and Akram has always responded quickly and has always been ready and waiting at the time of the lesson.
All the lessons were designed to my particular need which for me works a lot better than following lesson 1, lesson 2 etc. in a textbook. So I got what I wanted and more than I expected. Sometimes we experimented with learning and homework ideas, and we talked about music and exchanged some songs/artists and we talked about Arab culture and what I should expect in Jordan. All in all it has been a seriously enjoyable and soulful experience. I have found it difficult and challenging too - so if you're interested you can read my individual lesson reviews below - they are partly about the struggle of it all.
If you are reading this because you are looking for a teacher of MSA or spoken-Arabic, or both, I recommend you just book a trial lesson with Akram and see how it goes. He's a steady, well-educated guy and he's got the teaching tools. So go for it. What's to lose
