Proceed and advance can be ruled out. And progress only works with the preposition 'to' and sometimes with 'onto'. In this kind of exercise the grammar can also give you the answer. Sometimes the meaning of several options given can be similar but not all prepositions work with all the verbs, as I'm sure you already know. I'm only 90% sure about 'evolve'.
