Hi all, When someone says 'I am jealous', how do tell what they are speaking about? Are they jealous, because they want something that belongs to others, or because they suspect their partner may be cheating on them?

The wider conversation would make it clear. - I'm going to study in Paris for a year. - You're so lucky! I'm jealous. (This is quite a nice, friendly way to use 'jealous'. A person is unlikely to say, "I am jealous" if they really feel so.) - You're such a dedicated girlfriend. You always go to watch your boyfriend's band play every gig. - Actually, it's just because they have a lot of female fans and I'm jealous (Again, I can only imagine this being said half-jokingly.) I can't imagine a situation where somebody announces, "I'm jealous" with no context at all.

If we wanted to express our own romantic jealousy, we would probably use 'get jealous' or 'make me jealous'. "I'm jealous" would most likely be a light-hearted way to say that you are happy for someone else. I get jealous when my wife flirts with the customers when she is serving bar, even though she does it to get bigger tips. It makes me jealous when my husband chats with the nanny. I'm jealous of you! I hear you're going to Greece.

Few people make the distinction between envy and jealousy. In common speech among friends, it often means "Congratulations on your good luck ! I am envious (in a friendly way)." Envy - To want something that others have. The factory worker envied her sister who had an easy office job. Jealousy - 1 - To resent someone for having what the jealous person believes should belong to them. The child was jealous of the attention given to the new baby. 2 - To excessively guard what the jealous person believes belongs to them. The jealous boyfriend was unhappy when his girlfriend talked to men at the party.

If my friend tells me about a fun activity he will do this weekend, I sometimes say "Oh! I am jealous!" This is a friendly way to use the phrase that is both true and also joking. Большинство людей, испытывающих ревность в романтических отношениях, никогда не говорят об этом вслух.
