What is the difference between companhia and compania?
A friend from Brazil told me that where he works people write Compania, are both okay?

The word "compania" doesn't exist, in portuguese. Nevertheless, that is very common mistake in the spoken language. The correct is "companhia" .

Companhia é a presença de outra pessoa com você. Uma pessoa faz companhia à outra ficando ai seu lado. (Companhia is the presence of another person with you)
ou pode ser empresa comercial. Uma associação de pessoas com fins econômicos. (Companhia is a business company, an economical enterprise).
