"I was hurt" and "I got hurt" Those two aren't fully interchangeable, are they? Could somebody set that out for me? I do distinct the shades, but need an inclusive explanation. Thanks!

When your sentiments are hurt, you are hurt emotionally. My best friend did not turn up on my birthday I was hurt(emotionally) When you are physically hurt you say I got hurt. I fell down from the stairs, I got hurt(physically) This is what I perceive:)

I think, the principal difference between get hurt / lost / hit etc. and be hurt / lost / hit etc. is that the first expression refers to the action which is hurting somebody or the process of somebody getting hurt whereas the second one refers to the situation when somebody is hurt or the condition of somebody who has been hurt. In other words, "get" is used for a single action, and "be" is used to describe the permanent condition. For example, if somebody took a shot, you could say "He got hit by a bullet" (action). You could also ask the victim "Are you hurt?" (condition). Or you can say "They went to the forest and got lost" (action), and the lost people could say "I think we're lost" (condition). P.S. I agree with Nilu and I think the above could somewhat explain why "get hurt" is often used for physical wounds. After all, it takes a single move to hurt somebody physically, as for the emotional wounds... well it's complicated... Which is why it is not common to hear "I got hurt by their remark"))))

They could be interchangeable, and this is the way they would be used: I was hurt when my friend told me I was too fat. (emotionally hurt) (She hurt my feelings). I got hurt when the boy's bicycle ran into my leg. (physically hurt) The friend asked me, "Oh, did you get hurt when the bicycle hit you?" I was hurt in an automobile accident last year. I got hurt in an automobile accident last year. .....so you can interchange them.
