It's more of a figure of speech. "To scathe" means to injure, usually by heat (searing or burning). The use of "scathingly" in your examples is something like "so ____, it hurts." It's a kind of exaggeration, or even a suggestion of danger: "scathingly hysterical" means that the humour was also sharp and satirical.
