Hi I will try to explain this. In Spanish there are two verb for to say the verb to be.
SER and ESTAR
"Ser" is related with the caracteristics of the object. Example: El cuaderno es rojo, this sentence is like the book is red.
"Estar" is related with the position of the object, something like this, El cuaderno está en la mesa, this sentence is like the book is on the table.
Excuse for my English! and remember this topic is a little complex and you need to practice a lot with the different cases.
