What's the difference between "associate professor" and "adjunct professor"?

An associate professor is the second highest rank in the faculty. They fall between full professor and assistant professor. An Adjunct professor is employed on a part time class by class basis. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professor#United_States
