When talking about my family in Spanish, is it "son de" or "es de"? Example being "mi familia son de Rusia" or "mi familia es de Rusia"? I would think when talking about your family they would be a group (like ellos or ellas) so it would be "son"? Or are they a unit like El and Ella?

correct: mi familia es de Rusia It's a collective noun. In English you say "everybody in my class is nice", the same in Spanish El rebaño sube por la montaña (not suben) La manada ha crecido (not crecen)

It would be "son" since your family is a unit, but if your family is present and you would be introducing them to a friend it isn't incorrect to say "Ellos son de Russia" but it's a little less polite and more casual

The answer is "mi familia es de rusia" because it is taken in count that the family is a unit, and if you are refering to them as "my family, they are from russia" like if you are refering to "them" as a group and not an unit it would be "mi familia, ellos son de rusia".
