Often it has to do with the area of Germany. In the South 'anschauen' is preferred, whereas in the North 'angucken'. You can see this in the phrase 'Look at that!' South: Schau mal! North: Guck mal! Schauen/gucken is mostly just for looking. When you are actually watching something you rather do need a preposition to focus the looking. Anschauen/zuschauen/angucken/zugucken. In my experience, you would use 'anschauen/angucken' for something on TV, for example (a film, a series, a match) but zuschauen/zugucken when watching some kind of event like a live concert/play or somebody doing a 'stupid human' stunt. Wir schauten/guckten uns den Film im Fernsehen an. Wir schauten/guckten zu, als Herbert die Treppe runter fiel. (think: Zuschauer) Although Alexandra is right, you *can* use all of them... I would rather have the feeling that 'Ich habe den Film geguckt/gesehen/geschaut" more simply refers to the act of watching, possibly without much intellectual involvement. But 'Ich habe den Film angeschaut/anguckt' would indicate that you actually were paying attention and possibly have formed an opinion about what you saw. That's maybe why she automatically used 'ansehen' and not 'sehen' in her answer.

Darüber habe ich mir tatsächlich noch nie Gedanken gemacht. Aber es ist eher so wie du es sagt und ansehen klingt eleganter als angucken. Es passt an einigen Stellen einfach besser in den Kontext. Aber in Prinzip kannst du jede Form einsetzten. Alle passen auch wenn andere Menschen eine bestimmte Form in dem Kontext eher bevorzugen.
