clinged seems a bit unnatural and weird. it is not even a true word. it should be cling in the present tense. "There are things that can not progress if you cling to your infatuated self" if you continue to be a self-loving vain and conceited person

yes, you are correct, but your description is just another way of describing a self-loving vain conceited person. The English language is a Mongol language, for hundreds of years, we have been incorporating foreign words into the language to add meaning to existing words. Increasing vocabulary and very subtle extra layers of meaning. The English language is not a language where foreign words are incorporated to change an existing words meaning, but to enrich it and the Language. infatuated = with love, but not true lasting love.

The correct sentence should be "There are things that cannot progress if you continue to cling to your infatuated self." Infatuated does mean what John said. In this case, it means someone who thinks very highly of himself/herself and is seen as very arrogant or self-obsessed.
