What does "the first bid" mean? The sentense is "Together we are the first bid". It was said by a prime-minister after introducing the persons sitting around. What is "the first bid" ?

Dmitry -- It means that together, they are the first try at something. The "first bid" is the first offer you make when trying to negotiate a price. So he was using a metaphor -- he was comparing that group to the first offer at solving a problem.

Hello Dmitry, One meaning of first bid is the first formal proposal to buy at a certain price in an auction, but it is not the correct meaning in this context. In the context of a prime minister introducing persons( probably ministers) sitting around in a meeting it could rather mean: "we are the first authoritative direction to take decision or do something".
