Was bedeutet "gilt"? What does the word "gilt" mean? I've tried looking it up in various dictionaries, but still don't quite understand the exact meaning. The online dictionaries I use all seem to define it as meaning something along the lines of "to be valid" or "to be in effect". For example, "Mein Versprechen, nächsten Montag zu kommen, gilt nach wie vor." Google translate says that this means "My promise to come next Monday is still valid." Is that a correct translation? Is there a better way to translate that? What are some other examples of how someone could use the word "gilt" in a sentence?

-die Fahrkarte gilt zwei Monate - valid -diese Briefmarken gelten nicht mehr - not valid any more -das Gesetz gilt für alle - The law applies to all people - [im Spiel] das gilt nicht! (das widerspricht den Regeln des Spiels) - that is not according to the rules, that doesn't count Er gilt als reicher Mann. He is said to be a rich man. Regarding your example with promise: The promise is still valid (not sure if that is the best translation to English). He confirms that he will keep his promise, that he did not forget it.
