"El Moreño" es el apodo (nickname) del protagonista de ese "corrido" mexicano. Que yo sepa no es ninguna otra cosa.

moreño could mean:
* dark-haired ( women and men ) as in "de pelo moreño".
* brown , tanned
ponerse moreño = to tan , to go brown
* dark-skinned ( for women and men)
de tez moreña
* una morena (for women)
a brunette
* colored

In addition to Cherry's explanation, it may be interesting to note that "morena" is also the Spanish name for a Moray Eel.

this question attracks my attention. MOREÑO is not standard spanish. but as you are from philippines and the muslims of mindanao are called MOROS, moreño, could mean "in the ways of the moros" or "moro style". this word was in use in old times...it is very vulgar spanish, so it is possible it comes from these times of the war between spanish and philippines peoples.

If I don't make a mistake, it's spell moreno for man, and morena for woman, it means brunette.
