"I recommended him to call her" or "I recommended he call her" Hi, Is the phrase "I recommended him to call her" correct? I am studying that the correct sentence is "I recommended that he call her" but I am not sure if I could use the first one and if it has the same meaning. Thanks a lot. The subjunctive tense we have in Spanish is driving me crazy to translate into English :) Which one sounds more natural for you? Thanks

I recommended him to call her. << Grammatically incorrect. I recommended to him that he call her. << Correct. [note - not "he calls"] I recommended to him to call her. << Correct. I recommended that he call her. << Correct and natural. [note - not "he calls"] I recommended he call her. << Correct and natural. [note - not "he calls"]

Hi Sofia, The correct form is "I recommended (that) he call her." However, if there is more of the context available and the reader or listener can refer to what has been previously mentioned, then you can use the verb "recommend" followed by a gerund. Example: He wasn't sure how he could apologize to his girlfriend and I recommended calling her.

la frase "I recommended him" utilizamos solo en contexto que hemos recomendado a alguien para algo, no que hemos aconsejado a alguien algo. así que sera correcto, "I recommended him for the position." pero "I recommended to him to call her."

I agree with what Michelle, Chris, and Alireza wrote. "I recommended (that) he call her" is correct but the first sentence "I recommended him..." is not correct. Also, I hope I don't offend anyone, :) but the English in the response below that starts with "Well, first sentence..." has some errors in it. For instance, the phrases should be: "the first sentence," "If he were the subject," "then you could say it that way," "as the subject," and "then it would be correct to use..." Sorry, but I am just pointing that out so that any English language learners who read that particular response are not further confused. :)

This is less confusing: I recommended he call her. I advised him to call her.
